“Efficiency is doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things.” -Peter Drucker
The 80/20 rule sounds like a mathematical formula and in some ways, it is but don’t fret, this isn’t a lesson on statistics. The rule came from an Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto, who stated that 80% of the Italian income was earned by 20% of the Italian population.
What this means is that 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your inputs. To put this another way, 20% of your activities equate to 80% of your productivity, your happiness, or any other area you are seeking to improve as a leader. Instead of focusing on your individual productivity or happiness, we will focus on the overall engagement or...
“By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands—your own.” —Mark Victor Hansen
This is not the time of year when I purposely set goals for the year. This year has not really been one to be able to really focus on our goals with all the curve balls we have been thrown. This is all the more reason to reevaluate the goals you set at the beginning of the year. It is time to finish strong this year and time to get ready to go.
I encourage you to join me in setting YOUR goals now as well. Now…before the kids start school. Now…while you still have time to accomplish big things for this year.
“Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Leaders can see farther than others see, dream higher than others dream, and climb faster than others climb. However, if we reach the top only to turn around and find ourselves alone with no one at our side, we are not a leader.
We simply took a walk alone.
John Maxwell taught me, "The bottom line in leadership isn't how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others."
This can be the struggle of leadership sometimes. We want to go far, and we want to go fast. We are focused on the future, but we never bring our eyes back to the present. We often never create a flow of communication around the WHY of getting to this new and future goal....
Where do you want your passion to take you in life?
Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people. —Peter Strople
I have often said, “Leadership is not only what happens while you are here; it is also what happens after you are gone.”
When I reflect on this thought, I am reminded of my grandmother. She was a great leader in our family, and when she left in 1998, there was a great void in my life. She is the one person who still inspires me to be a better man, husband, father, and leader. I talk about her frequently to my kids and only wish they would have met her.
I am sure you have someone in your life, too, who reminds you to be better. You are thinking of them right now. The...
“Five percent of the people think;
ten percent of the people think they think;
and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.” ― Thomas A. Edison
Over the last weeks and now months our lives have been changed and disrupted in ways most of us could never have imagined. I for one, never expected the world to shut down as it has for so long. Even after 9/11 within a week much of the world was back to normal. And I believe we will return to our normal again soon.
However, I hope that you're starting to think a little bit differently, do some things a little bit differently in your life. I'm all about helping people do things differently. And I know how hard that can be. I grew up in a...
The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind,
but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud,
but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly” ~ Jim Rohn
I am a firm believer you can be a tough leader with others if you are really caring for them too. What do I mean by tough? I mean holding the bar high on expectations and accountability. Being a tough leader does not mean screaming, yelling, and cursing at others, which I saw a lot growing up.
It is kind of like parenting. I have been a firm leader of my kids with high expectations and lots of love and care for them and their future. I feel like today my son and I have a deep respect for one another. He does not avoid me,...
What does the quote mean to you?
“We either believe we can, or we can’t, either way we are right.” ~ Henry Ford
We are facing challenging times in our world right now, and almost everything about our way of life, both personally and professionally has changed at least for now.
Growing up, I used to hear, as I am sure you did, “You can be anything in life you want to be if you just put your mind to it.”
If this is true, then why do most people end up so dissatisfied in life?
Research shares with us that 70% or more of people in America are unhappy. WOW!
Why are we unhappy?
This study went on to blame this unhappiness on others… or at least that was my take anyway. It said the reason people are unhappy...
Balancing your home and career can be a challenge for any employee, especially when you live and work in the same space. How do you allocate your time between personal and professional responsibilities? How can you focus on conference calls when you’re surrounded by dirty laundry?
Learn how to set priorities and reduce distractions whether you’re new to remote working or you moved out of your cubicle years ago. Use these tips to stay productive when you work from home.
The majority of people around the world have been quarantined. We've been practicing our physical distancing for several weeks now. We're continuing to watch the world change right before our eyes. The way that we lead and the way our businesses do things are changing on an everyday basis. My questions for you is, are you changing as well; will you exit this craziness better than you entered?
Below I will share 3 checks to balance things out in our leadership.
#1 Check the source of your wisdom - What do I mean by that? Wisdom is everything, knowledge is having information. So, think about this for just a minute knowledge is having information; like I know a lot of things. I bet you know a lot of things. I bet you're smart. You've...
This has been one WHALE of a first quarter to 2020. It seems as if all was going right in the world 3 weeks ago and then the dreaded Covid 19 found us in denial and slipped into our lives. Like you I am a little shell shocked and wondering how we got here and am hoping to wake up from the nightmare soon.
Have you ever had one of those nightmares where you were trying to wake up, but couldn’t and you find yourself fighting to catch yourself or just get free? Yeah, me too! I have had a few of those in my life and I feel like we are in one right now.
However, I do know this. We will wake-up, we will get through this and we will come out better on the other side than we were when we entered this chaos. BUT only if we follow...
